If you've seen the Gallery lately, I recently received the black micarta Loveless Style Drop Point with CTS-BD30 steel.

So far it's been outstanding in performance. It truly seems redundant and almost hyperbolic to say but each knife I've ever gotten from the shop has always come with an unbelievable edge.

I occasionally browse the knife publications when I'm in the bookstore, and I think I've seen an article or two mentioning CTS-BD30, but besides that I haven't heard too much. It seems to me Bob is one of the only custom knifemakers currently working with these Carpenter's Steels, would it be possible to get some info or opinions from Bob on this steel?

I remember Bob mentioning he preferred the -40CP for the mirror polished knives he makes, additionally the -XHP being the top of the line as far as stainless goes, and I'm interested what some of the differences are in properties or if there's any particular difference in the heat treatment process for -BD30.

If any other of our members here have any info on it as well it'd be appreciated.

(I'll also post this in Knifemaker's Board as well)

Moved for you! :) With a shadow in the General forum.

I was told that it is experimental steel from Carpenter.
It is their version of S30V.
I tried to have a knife made from that steel and was told it was not available as an option on a ordered knife...I hope that changes.

I have been EDCing and using a K-3 Select Purpose knife with the CTS- DB30 blade steel for awhile now. I am finding the edge holding of this steel incredible. I put a polished razor edge on my knives and the CTS-BD30 just cuts and cuts.

I have knives with S-30V that are extremely good but I am getting even better performance with the CTS-BD30. Of course blade geometry has alot to do with cutting efficiency but I really am impressed with this steel.
Because of its performance the K-3 has become a real favorite of mine.

I recently aquired a knife with the CTS-40CP steel and it appears to be very promising as well. After putting my own personal edge on it I have yet to touch it up any, but I haven't had it in use long enough to really make a comparison.

The powdered metal technology steels make good sense to me from what I have been able to learn about them. Carbide distribution seems to be their strong point as well as retaining toughness at a harder heat treat Rc level.
S-30V, CTS-BD30, and CTS-40CP show great potential for "using" knives which is where my interests lie. I will add more as I use these steels over time.
